With its strong agri-tech sector and natural assets, Northumberland is renowned as an ideal location for growing grains such as wheat, oats and barley, making the county an attractive setting for businesses operating in the food and drinks industry.
Head Quartered in the Northumberland border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Silvery Tweed Cereals has been producing refined products from the raw grains and seeds grown locally for 175 years, and now, with support from Advacne Northumeberland, Silvery Tweed is facing the future with renewed optimism. Employing 85 full-time members of staff and turning over £20 million per year, Silvery Tweed Cereals is a great Northumberland success story.
A family-owned business now in its fifth generation, Silvery Tweed Cereals is one of the principle grain suppliers to some of the biggest bakeries and breakfast cereal manufacturers in the UK. Producing refined cereals for food production, including a large range of flakes, cut grains and speciality flours, as well as a range of sweet and savoury coatings for oats, barley, wheat and puffed cereals, 98% of Silvery Tweed’s produce can be found in one form or another on supermarket shelves up and down the country. The company sources all of its raw materials within a 40-mile radius of its manufacturing facility in Berwick and recognises the important role its Northumberland location has played in its sustained success and the quality of its products.
Silvery Tweed has been working with the Business Team’s strategic account management service to help grow its cereals business and invest further in Northumberland.
