The North East Fund is a £120m investment programme available to SMEs across Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. Businesses relocating to the area may also be eligible. There are five funds – each with a different investment focus to suit the needs of SMEs depending on the sector in which they operate and where they sit on the growth curve. Narec Distributed Energy (NDE) is once more offering 100% funded accredited heat pump training courses to North East based heating engineers; training them to install and maintain this renewable energy heating system.
The courses are:

- Fundamental Principles of Environmental Technology Systems - Logic Level 3 - 1 day
Funding is provided through the European Social Fund via New College Durham
Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing Project is a £5.1M ERDF project to support the implementation of product and process development and the introduction of technology within the SME manufacturing base within the NE LEP area.
ERDF funding of £2.6M and the University of Sunderland are managing and investing £2.5M in delivery of this project.
The University of Sunderland have committed significant academic resources and recruited industrial specialists to support the delivery of both practical and research support.
The project has in excess of £800K in grants to support capital / product validation / tooling and other financial inhibitors to driving strategic development of both product and process.

BEES can provide a fully funded energy audit for your business, delivered by qualified energy experts. The audit will identify financial savings from energy efficiency improvements and work with you to develop a plan to achieve those savings.
The audit will also identify carbon savings and help to reduce your company’s environmental impact.
There will also be a limited capital grant available for SMEs to apply for, which would help to fund the capital cost of eligible energy efficient technologies identified in the energy audit.
Subject to funding approval from the European Regional Development Fund, the project is expected to launch in August 2018.

The new scheme from NBSL allows businesses to access up to 35% funding towards projects costing between £3,000 and £8,000, with a maximum grant of £2,800.
Geographically, any business in the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (NELEP) area of County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear can bid for the funding.
The fund can be used for most forms of external expertise such as:
- business growth planning
- strategy development
- change management
- expansion planning
- developing quality management systems
- product development
- accessing new markets
- design costs
Capital purchases, printing and advertising costs cannot be funded.

The Green Business Fund from the Carbon Trust is now offering up to 30% of the total project cost for energy efficient equipment upgrades and refurbishments, up to a maximum of £10,000.*
This offer is open to qualifying SMEs in England, Scotland and Wales and is time limited. As well as the non-repayable Capital Contribution, qualifying businesses are also entitled to receive the following support at no cost:
- Energy survey for business
- Energy saving equipment implementation advice
Implementation support is only available for companies with up to 1,000 employees and is available until March 2018, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Northumbria University is keen to help businesses to address challenges that they face through the provision of free consultancy via its Business Clinic.
The clinic was established to give final year and post-graduate students opportunities to get experience of problem solving in a real working environment.
Businesses present the clinic with details of specific challenges that they face and will then task a group of four students to provide a solution with the support of a team of experts in Newcastle Business School.
