North of Tyne Combined Authority Growth Fund for SMEs

Are you a small or medium enterprise based in Newcastle, North Tyneside or Northumberland with exciting plans to grow your business?

Support is available for business growth and fostering innovative processes which will drive productivity resulting in increased profitability, wage growth and employment growth in SMEs. We aim to assist SMEs with their growth plans ensuring they are viable, create new jobs and deliver results. Grants are available through our delivery partner UMi to contribute towards the total cost, these start from £40,000 (requiring a minimum total investment of £200k for a medium and £134k for a small business). Businesses seeking support will need to demonstrate that financial assistance is required for the investment to progress. North of Tyne Combined Authority Inward Investment Fund

Are you a business looking to make a first investment in Newcastle, North Tyneside or Northumberland? We have £10m available to support businesses looking to invest and create jobs and may be able to contribute to up to 10% of your costs. Grants are available between £100,000 up to a maximum of £1million for foreign or UK owned businesses making a first investment in the area. The North East Fund

The North East Fund is a £120m investment programme available to SMEs across Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. Businesses relocating to the area may also be eligible. There are five funds – each with a different investment focus to suit the needs of SMEs depending on the sector in which they operate and where they sit on the growth curve. ERDF Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing - SME Support Programme

Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing Project is a £5.1M ERDF project to support the implementation of product and process development and the introduction of technology within the SME manufacturing base within the NE LEP area. ERDF funding of £2.6M and the University of Sunderland are managing and investing £2.5M in delivery of this project. The University of Sunderland have committed significant academic resources and recruited industrial specialists to support the delivery of both practical and research support. The project has in excess of £800K in grants to support capital / product validation / tooling and other financial inhibitors to driving strategic development of both product and process.

The Business Energy Saving Team (BEST)

The Business Energy Saving Team (BEST)  is a project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and delivered by local Councils, which aims to reduce energy use and costs in small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland and Sunderland.  BEST can provide your business with a fully-funded energy efficiency audit, designed to help you to identify ways that you can save energy in your day to day business operations, thereby saving you money and helping to reduce your carbon-footprint. The BEST programme may even be able to provide you with a grant to help cover the costs of improvements. So, you’ll reduce your running costs and be doing your ‘bit’ for the environment too. NBSL - North East Business Support Fund

The new scheme from NBSL allows businesses to access up to 35% funding towards projects costing between £3,000 and £8,000, with a maximum grant of £2,800. Geographically, any business in the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (NELEP) area of County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear can bid for the funding. The fund can be used for most forms of external expertise such as:

  • business growth planning
  • marketing
  • strategy development
  • change management
  • expansion planning
  • developing quality management systems
  • product development
  • accessing new markets
  • design costs

North East Investment Fund

The North East Investment Fund is a loan fund supporting capital projects that encourage local economic growth and create jobs in our area. Since 2012, £58 million has been secured by organisations with projects that will have a positive impact on the North East regional economy. The North East Investment Fund is managed by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership and financed by £25m of Growing Places Fund and £30m of Regional Growth Fund. The Business Clinic- Northumbria University

Northumbria University is keen to help businesses to address challenges that they face through the provision of free consultancy via its Business Clinic. The clinic was established to give final year and post-graduate students opportunities to get experience of problem solving in a real working environment. Businesses present the clinic with details of specific challenges that they face and will then task a group of four students to provide a solution with the support of a team of experts in Newcastle Business School.
