Next phase of work begins on Bedlington town centre regeneration with new B&M and Starbucks Drive-Thru

Advance Northumberland has confirmed that work is set to begin on the next major phase of the ongoing regeneration of Bedlington Town Centre, with the development of a new B&M variety store and Starbucks Drive-Thru.

The project represents another significant milestone in the long-term transformation of Bedlington, building on the success of previous phases and continuing to create a modern town centre that serves the needs of its residents and businesses.

Located off Schalksmuhle Road, the development will bring a new 19,000 sq ft B&M variety store alongside an 1,800sq ft Starbucks Drive-Thru, creating a strong gateway into the town centre and enhancing the retail and leisure offer available to local communities.

Together, the two businesses are expected to create around 50 new jobs, providing a mix of full-time and part-time employment opportunities for local people while helping to increase footfall, support surrounding businesses and attract further investment into the area.

The B&M store will occupy a prominent position on Retail Lane, the new boulevard that links the town's car parks with Market Terrace and the wider town centre. The development has been carefully designed to complement the wider regeneration programme and create an attractive and accessible retail destination.

Construction works are set to commence on Monday 28th September 2026. The development will deliver a new B&M retail store and Starbucks Drive Thru, alongside associated external infrastructure and landscaping works. Construction is expected to be completed by summer 2027, with retailer fit out works anticipated to conclude in autumn 2027 ahead of opening.

Northumberland County Councillor Richard Wearmouth, Cabinet member for Regeneration, said: "The start of works on this latest phase marks another important step in the continued evolution of the town centre and demonstrates ongoing confidence in Bedlington as a prime location for investment and growth.

"The area continues to see really positive development, with the new rail station, new walking and cycling infrastructure and the ongoing expansion of the town centre offer. We're looking forward to spades going in the ground in the coming weeks."

Advance Northumberland secured outline planning permission for the wider redevelopment of Bedlington Town Centre in 2018 and has since successfully delivered two key phases of the project. These include the opening of Aldi in 2021 and the creation of the new Market Place, which introduced four modern retail units, including Greggs, together with six fully occupied residential apartments.
