Discover the Green Future of Potland Burn
Learn more about plans to create a habitat bank at Potland Burn in Ashington at an upcoming event.
Advance Green Futures, part of Advance Northumberland, will host an informal drop in on Tuesday 10th February between 4.00pm and 6.00pm at Ashington Cricket Club, Langwell Crescent, Ashington, NE63 8AB.
The aim of the Potland Burn focussed event is to share how a habitat bank works and how nature and biodiversity at the site will be enhanced over the coming months and years. The Advance Green Futures team will be on hand to answer questions and share information about the long-term future and aspirations for the area.
Potland Burn is an environmentally important piece of land, situated between Ashington and Pegswood, located on a former opencast mine site, which was restored to grassland and arable fields and is now being created into a habitat bank and will include creating a range of habitats covering the area of about 500 football pitches to support rich biodiversity.
Advance Green Futures will enhance the land to become a managed, species-rich mosaic of habitats, including grassland, scrub, ponds, ditches, and hedges, supporting rich biodiversity. The Advance Green Futures team are focused on the long-term prospects of developing this green space.
Northumberland County Councillor John Riddle, Cabinet Member for Rural and Environment, added:
“It is exciting that this innovative and forward-thinking environmental project is located in Ashington.
"Potland Burn will achieve long-term, high-quality biodiversity net gain through the creation and enhancement of natural habitats, species-rich grassland, and a myriad of ponds and woodland, allowing the site to be available to the community to enjoy in years to come.
"It will also be an extremely positive commercial venture - generating substantial income through the sale of offset units and enabling other major economic projects in the area by providing a biodiversity net gain solution for employment sites across Northumberland."
Ann Deary Francis, Senior Ecologist, Advance Green Futures commented:
“We are thrilled to host this event and have the opportunity to meet the local community to share and discuss our future plans for the habitat bank at Potland Burn. The long term future of the site is now dedicated to promoting local nature enhancement and landscape resilience, which is vital for the area.”
