Advance Northumberland and Morrisons have signed the deal for a new retail park development on the site of the former Northumberland Foods Factory in Amble.
In a joint development between Advance Northumberland and supermarket chain Morrisons, the scheme will comprise of an exciting new retail park, anchored by a 25,000 sq.ft. Morrisons food store, complemented by a number of other national retailers, a petrol filling station and a Drive Thru facility.
With this national anchor now in place, Advance Northumberland has a strong platform upon which to attract further investment into Amble and take forward the delivery of a comprehensive new Retail Park development on behalf of NCC. With over £10m of funds already invested in the town, Amble represents a high priority. We continue to promote tourism and leisure through ownership of Amble Links Caravan Park, alongside the recently completed Amble Inn and the imminent Tiger Lifting facility, this confirms Northumberland County Council’s commitment to ensure Amble remains a key coastal destination.
Located on the famous Northumberland “Coastal Route”, this significant private investment will transform the southern gateway into Amble and provide a destination of choice. Once the whole scheme is completed it is anticipated these developments combined will bring up to 200 new local jobs to the area, provide additional car parking and infrastructure and ensure Amble has the shopping experience it deserves. The store will be a ground-breaking “Neighbourhood Food Store” a first for the North East, providing amenities and services for local residents including the many visitors that flock to Amble every year.
The development, which will be rebranded Amble Retail Park, also includes a petrol station and kiosk, four other retail units of varying sizes, a drive-thru coffee shop and 352 parking spaces. It will create up to 200 new full and part-time jobs, plus around 90 during the construction phase. The site has been vacant since the former food factory closure in 2011.
Cllr Richard Wearmouth, Chair of Advance Northumberland said: “Working together with Morrisons has been extremely rewarding, our joint plans will contribute a great deal to the regeneration of the Enterprise Park. This includes attracting private investment into Northumberland, creating new opportunities and up to 200 jobs for local people while boosting the economy of Amble and surrounding towns. Work is anticipated to commence with the store opening next year”.
Coun Jeff Watson, ward member for Amble West with Warkworth, added: “The progress made by Amble in recent years has been tremendous and this is another great boost for the area - both in terms of the retail offer and job opportunities for local people.”
James Smith, Morrisons Senior Development Manager added: “The new Morrisons in Amble will offer customers fresh food made by our talented foodmakers as well as creating lots of new local jobs. We’re pleased to reach this exciting milestone and look forward to the site taking shape over the next few months.”Back to News
